The Void (2016)

Going into The Void I was excited to see some practical effects and some cool creature designs, as this is what the movie has been praised for. However, the film was also praised as an 80's horror revival flick as well which at this point is becoming nails on a chalkboard to horror enthusiasts everywhere. While this praise is misplaced, the film still fails more than it probably would have as the cock gobbling tribute to Carpenter or Cronenberg it could have been. The film lacks any substance in its story as to why the plot develops in the way that it does and the acting is bad in a way that is far from charming. While the film's strength is in its practical effects, cheap camera tricks and poor lighting did not allow this amazing work to be fully appreciated. It felt as though the special effects artists were not confident in their work or that the camera man was just fucking loaded the entire shoot. With an incredibly uninteresting score, boring camera work, and tacky imagery, The Void is not worth more than a quick stream at the most.
