Raw (2016)

I went in to Raw, with pretty high expectations as the idea is truly brilliant, a girl who becomes a cannibal after her first seductive taste of meat as a life long vegetarian? I mean c'mon that's fucking sick. Unfortunately that is all you get, exactly that. The film could've taken this concept so much farther than it did, and as a result, Raw feels like a really great short. While the film does run over 90 minutes, it lacks a traditional narrative story arch, and while I normally would encourage this, in this instance it just made the film seem like more of a tease than a completed idea. The film is visually amazing, and has one of the best scores in previous years by composer Jim Williams. The film is incredibly well acted and in terms of gore will give the general audience the cringe they are looking for but leave the gore hound wanting more. Despite my problems with its story and lack of exploration within it, Raw is certainly a great film that is highly entertaining to watch and in terms of horror gets the job done, it just won't be a film we discuss beyond a review of this years notable horror flicks.
